I was one of the luckiest people from our gang to write almost all placement exam conducted by an agency called Shreds in Cochin. Luckily I got enough percentage to appear in all company exams. We went to Cochin had awesome food, stayed at one of my friend's uncle's guest house. Majjani life..!! For Ist two exams we didn't even bother to study and wrote exam. Result was as expected. Next time I got more company from our gang as everyone improved their percentage or cut off got reduced. This time we prepared well and wrote exams for Infosys, Capegemini, Aztec, I flex ...etc. But I didn't clear any. I still remember the boat trip that we went for after losing in Infosys exam. That was awesome. In the middle it rained, still we enjoyed the trip. During these exams some of them got placed. For TCS exam, lot from my college whoever attended before me got placed. So I thought its no big deal even I can clear these stupid exams. I wrote it with immense hope but still no miracle. That was an online exam and the computer said "Dude enough.. Go and write nursery exams and then come back after 6 months". What to do what to do. But I was not that depressed. Tension was only for my producer. My stupid son not even clearing a single exam. What am I gonna do what am gonna do with this idiot. Obviously producer will get upset if he is not getting the money back that he invested in my exams. All exams starring me were utter flop.
Then came the campus recruitment in 8th semester. Only one company came to recruite in our world popular college. HCL Infosystems. It was for some network engineer post. God knows what was that. Anyway we all wrote exams. Some of them opted out saying that job doesn't suite their status. Anyways, I, Varun Mohan, Jijin and Abhishek (Class topper) from our class cleared the exam. I think Bablu dutt from our class was also cleared. Hooraayy.. Ist time passed a company exam. Couldn't sleep for 2 days. HCL officials asked us to attend Interview in our Cochin university. We all were very excited for our Ist interview. We reached there one day before and stayed in CUSAT University College. Wow that college was amazing. It was a big college and the students there were very funny. Anyways we started preparing for our big interview. We did some mock interview session and all... Boy we were that much excited. I bihearted some question and answers. " Hi, I am Shimith. I am from College of engineering thalassery. I am doing BTech IT. My hobbies are ...". I went through my projects also. We all did. Then came the day. We all were up very early and got ready for the big day. Did we wear Tie? Well I don't remember. Whatever, we did our best to show we are there to get the job and won't go back until we get freedom.. oops..sorry job. We reached the office where they were conducting the interview session on time. Till reaching there I was fine. Once I saw the students waiting there for interview I started losing my optimism. From these many people how many of them gonna get the job. I don't look smarter than them at all (than ones from my gang as well). Anyways, my turn came. I went and sat in front of the interviewer. He took my resume and said “Hi Shimith.. So you are an IT student from College of engineering Thalassery right..!!" I blinked for a while and said yes. I got nervous. Whatever I had prepared was already told by him. Now what..!! He asked me what was my favourite subject. I didn't prepare for this question so I took a while to answer. I was thinking of my plus two days and College was nowhere near in my mind. And I said Physics. As he couldn't ask any questions related to Physics he asked for my favourite subject in college. Now mindset back to college Ist semester and I said Engineering Mechanics. He asked me what was that subject. I said its related to Physics. He got fed up with me and asked me Newton's Ist law of motion. Seriously telling I am not that good in Physics. But still the answer came in my mouth and I omitted it. I think he got impressed. Then he asked me why I was attending the interview. I said "for a job”. Then what. Stupid question. He asked me what job. I said "This is for Network engineer, isn't it?" He said yes and drew some diagram and said HCL has got so many functional, areas and marked all areas like S/w engineer, Network engineer, call centre and all. He said I should be knowing all the functionality in a company if I am working for that company. I didn't understand what his point was so I shook my head whenever he said "right?". Then came the question. From this diagram which post you want? Damn it; I was not at all listening and I started staring at the diagram. I saw Network engineer somewhere and I pointed that particular box and told I want this, like Archimedes said Eureka..!! He stared at me and started explaining all company related stuffs. I gave up my hope as I knew that HCL and all HCL related companies never hire me. I thought they will ban me on appearing again for HCL..!! My interview lasted 45 mins. Everyone had same kind of stories to tell. But I thought I was the stupidest among all.
Days passed by and life was normal again. Last semester exams so we got engaged in studies. Few days after the interview VISHU came, Malayali New year, I got up early and lightened crackers got some pocket money from dad and some relatives like a normal VISHU. I just connected to internet and checked my mail which I won't do daily. I saw a mail from a guy called Kunal Varma saying I was selected to work for HCL in AP. I couldn't believe the mail. After all my idiotic acting in interview they selected me. After some 10-15 flops this movie became a blockbuster..!!Wow..!! They selected only 3 persons from our college and they were ShijiTH, ManjiTH and ShimiTH. Then I understood the logic for selection criteria. The recruitment was for persons with identical names, though other two were brilliant students.
We knew that we had to be in contract period for a year with HCL and need to pay RS- 1 Lakh from which they will give 60000 RS back. Whatever I was a bit excited as I got a job. Eventhough movie was an unexpected hit the Producer was not so happy as he was already in debt. One day Mom asked me if I really wanted to go for it as Dad was getting no sleep to make that much amount. haahhh...Testng times... I said ok then I am not going and kicked the Ist job I got out from my mind. Life is a rollercoaster.!!

A Few Things That I Remember - Chapter 4
Well.. As time passed by... Last semester..Need to score good marks.. Need to get a good job.. Good Future...blah blah blah....all these thoughts made everyone very very busy...I still didn’t have any idea whats after B Tech. Dad used to read all The Hindu Opportunities and often asked me to apply for all of those posts. He wanted his son to get a job just like his colleague’s sons. 8th semester we had to do a major project as per our syllabus.
Oh yeah Projects..funny and stupid things.. Projects and seminars were very tough assignments for us. We got to do 3 minor projects from S5 to S7 and a Major one in S8. At first we thought, oh god we are not gonna make it and we are gonna loose all our marks (plural) in projects. So to improve ourselves, we visited SSi, NIIT, Universal and CDAC institute time by time based on our project needs. SSi and NIIT are very close to our heart. Lot of memories are sleeping over there. SSi only taught us the ABCD of coding in C ,C++ and also in Java (even though I didn’t understand anything). In the beginning I was bit sceptical about those classes but nodded my head all the time as others were able to understand. For 5th semester I and Adarsh did the project together... I is silent over here.. We have to do a project in Visual Basic. I think Adarsh came up with Gas Agency automation project ( :P). Not sure. So we started visiting all Gas agencies to know what exactly we are gonna do. I still remember a guy who happily invited us to his shop when we said we wanted to know about his agency business. We thought “God at last we got it. This is it”. We were expecting Hi5 computers and followed him. Then he showed us a Gas cylinder and said he wants Rs.500 for us to take it. I pinched myself to make sure am not dreaming. We nearly escaped from him saying will come back later. This was Adarsh’s idea as this place was close to his house and he can leave home easily.
After a long search I got a new place, neutral, neither near to mine nor his house, where we can get sufficient information. We actually thought for a while, do we really need to go that far (45 mins from college) for a project? A last we decided to sacrifice our precious time for this project. We got some ideas from this place and based on that I prepared around 30 forms in VB. Adarsh didn't even bother to look at it and rejected all of em. He became very good in coding and started coding for the project. I tell ya.. In a project, you should always be worried about the comfort of your project mate. So I became very cautious to not to disturb him. I played cricket when he was designing. I listen to music and played Maxpayne game when he was coding. Because of all this kind of effort he finished the project with ease. There were some issues here and there but Adarsh nicely hid all of them and we (singular) submitted the project. But there comes another problem; we need to give a presentation while submitting the project.damn.. None of us (our gang) were good at presentation, though we were very good at Smalltalk.. Aah good old college days..Oops.. Focus.. Focus..Shimith!!Oh Yeah, So we started preparing for the presentation. I was more nervous coz whole project was done by Adarsh..one man show. I just suggested which and all colours we can use for the VB forms.. thats all . My role ended there.. Adarsh said he wants to take the Ist part about the project. I had no problem. Ist or Last.. both same for me. He had written all those stuffs in a piece of paper that hes gonna present. So we entered the room for our Big presentation. Some 3 -4 lecturers were seated there to review our Janaganamana. “Ready whenever you are” Lectures said like Judge Simon from American Idol. After hearing this, Adarsh started reading his paper without looking at anyone. He was reading like " Hi..my name is Adarsh.I am from S5 IT ..My role number is 2. Our project is Gas agency automation....etc at a single stretch !! By seeing this I started laughing.. I couldn’t control it and wondered how did our lectures keep calm and listen to him. All lectures were staring at me so I kept my face down under the desk and laughed. I think Adarsh was also laughing by seeing this. Don’t remember exactly. Then my turn came. As I was so refreshed by Adarsh’s presentation, I drew some diagrams and said something which were not related to the project. Some basic DB and VB stuffs and finished my presentation..!! When they announced the results, I got more than Adarsh. Poor guy. seriously. The same repeated in the next semester as well. So Adarsh said this won’t work out and I have to find a new partner for 7th semester project. Damn you Adarsh..!! I think Unni tricked him to his team.
So, I started searching for a new project mate. After a long audition process found my Ideal project mate. Vigilkumar. Our Partial output guy. I think ours were the worst team among all in 7th semester. Because Vigil also didn’t have prior experience of coding and no plans to do in the future just like me. 7th sem project was about some web design and all. I came up with an Idea of VIvaham.com so that we can copy all functionalities of Shaadhi.com. So we joined NIIT for this. Our Teacher over there was a very knowledgeable guy. As I mentioned earlier I am no good at coding, we didn’t do anything at the initial stage of the project. Adarsh paired up with Unni and Jijin and were busy coding some Auction WebSite. Prabin and Varun were also there doing some web design called Mock (if I remember correctly). As I was good at animation (not sooo good), I did a small animation about my project title and showed it to our Teacher. He got very impressed and rest is history. I will create some page, add a button and literally ask him “can I do this way or that way”. He used to sit and do everything for us. Myself and Vigil kumar presented the project successfully in college and lecturers got impressed and told us to maintain it as online. Of course they weren’t aware of Shaadhi.com.
By seeing my huge success in project, Adarsh wants to join my team again for the Major project in 8th sem. So I, Adarsh and rival Rasheed formed a team and joined CDAC Calicut for our Major project. We each paid Rs. 4000. Damn I don’t remember name of the project and what was it for. I only remember that, the application is being used by one of the private firm in Kerala. Our instructor over there gave us that incomplete project and asked us to modify it to add more functionality. Then only we realized that he was expecting something from us. Because of this we had to pretend that we were doing something, everyday.. Damn sitting idle in front of the system was horrible. From there only we came to know about gmail and created our own accounts. We (except Rasheed) had breakfast, lunch and dinner every day but no coding. Poor guy Rasheed used to sit and do the coding or we thought he was coding. When we were asked to submit the project by CDAC, we told Rasheed to present it as he was the only one who did (or modified) it. When our instructor reviewed the project, he got angry as it was at the same stage when we got it, with only the colour of forms changed in black (or violet). We scolded Rasheed for not doing it properly as if we didn’t get a chance to do it and we definitely would have applied a different colour than black (or violet). Luckily we got sign off from CDAC and submitted the project.
Oh yeah Projects..funny and stupid things.. Projects and seminars were very tough assignments for us. We got to do 3 minor projects from S5 to S7 and a Major one in S8. A Few Things That I Remember - Chapter 3
Our Gang sleeps in the back bench during lectures. There were 2- 3 guys and all gals who were curious about lectures all the time. We never disturbed them as we need help from them during exams and assignments. For them classes were precious or something more than that. We didn't simply gave up listening lectures. We also tried once to listen but failed. That one was a computer science class S1S2. Computer Science Miss used to come everyday and says "Its a computer, thats a computer whats a computer" and all. After that she will start asking questions. I didn't even understand the questions and asked my friends for both question and answer. great, to whom I am asking. We all were same. But its just standing for 5 mins when she asks questions. So we never cared about em after that. Some lecturers were very strict, so we couldn't enjoy those classes. These were till semester 3.
There were some subjects which we couldn't understand at all. Even now we don't know why we learned all those stuffs and how did we pass. Some Financial Management and crap. That Lecturer (Sathar sir I guess) will come to the class and will start spitting on us. I was never able to control my sleep in that class. For me whenever he talks about Ledger and journel in Financial Management, I felt he is telling some nice story. Like, Long long ago there were some liabilities and commodities and then I will go to a deep sleep. I have seen even gals sleeping in that class.
We loved talking and laughing in the class. I was the no 1 in that and caught almost all the time. I could never control my laugh. Lecturers used call me and ask to explain whatever they were teaching that time. I used to look at the board and make sentences based on whatever were written. And always I escaped like this.he he.. you won't believe, once Database Miss thought I was really good and listening even though I laughed. she freed me and gave warning to my friends.
Someone had said that Engineering is an art of acquiring skills to invent something. Well we heard it first. We invented loads of games for time pass during lectures. Games like PRAV and all. We played Anthakshari, kinda gay, still ok. We also played Police and thief game during class time. I still remember Prabin searching for songs when I gave letter B. He was like " damn.. B..Ba.. Baloon... aah.. Baaletta Baaletta Baaletta Baaletta Baaalettaa..Ba" and gave me a B..I was blinking and never played that game after that..
Life is to explore and do what your heart says (watch 3 idiots)..After Semester 4 we realized that we were a disturbance to class as our classmates were not able to concentrate. This is why we started bunking classes. Another sacrifice from us for the benefit of class. We used have round table meeting to plan Mass bunk. But never got all the votes from class. We bunked almost all after noon lectures after S4. Prabin and Unni were the one who used to plan it and rest of us will approve it. " Today 2 Tele communication and 2 system programming class after noon and they won't take attendance so we will leave by sharp 1". This is how we built our plan. I'll tell you one thing. Bunking is like drinking alcohol. Once you started it, there is no go back. We were so determined about bunking. There were so many occasions when we couldn't bunk and were shivering to bunk like a drunkard will feel if he doesn't get to drink. I remember Prabin used to scold us and murmurs all the time during these classes for not cooperating with his plan . We thought those were the horrible times in our lives. But nope... It was yet to come.
One day on a sunny noon we were just chatting as usual after lunch with no plan of bunking. Suddenly we realized that its going to be a FULL Software Project Management (SPM) class. The class was about to start and SPM Miss was on the way. We quickly jumped out of the class and saw Miss coming. So I and Unni Hid behind the wall. Our hero prabin stood in front of the Miss with his bag on shoulder in Rajani style. Our classmates were very nice to us and they nicely pointed out where we were hiding to The Miss. She felt bad and irritated and said "If any one who is not interested in my class, they can leave". "Da she said we can leave; lets go" said Prabin and we left. Poor Miss was standing there for sometime......

A Few Things That I Remember - Chapter 2
Copying is an art. You should have special skills to do that.It can be very dangerous and its not for kids. In college and all, apart from studying, to make your run rate high, you should be flexible in copying. We learned it gradually and Mastered in it. My(not mine) first copying experience in college was funny.
"Da.. show it to me ... come on shimith.. at least one yaar.. be a man..!!" This is S1S2 Electrical Technology Series exam. Adarsh is so nervous to get answers like everyone in the hall.. He saw me taking 1 or 2 extra papers and thought I was writing something related to the subject..poor dude.. He started pulling my shirt even after telling him that my answers were wrong. You can't blame him. When the time is so bad, you will be desperate to fight against it. Also you would love to write something on your answer sheet. We had a worst experience of Computer Science paper asking to draw a cat in Q-Basic program and all. Not knowing that the question paper was interchanged and not related to B tech IT, our Adarsh wrote Q-Basic in the answer sheet and made a drawing of a cat. He was the one who wrote something on that exam.
Anyway, as a friend I felt bad and I handed over my answer sheet by telling that the laws and calculations used for the questions are Wrong. Who cares..He was like a kid who got Ice cream out of nowhere and completed the exam Bindaazz. When the results were announced we were caught for copying, as same answers were wrong in mine and his papers..ditto...!!
We do copy during exams all the time. If it was Class test , series test, lab test or Semester exam.. All were same for us. On last semester exam the one sat next to me was one of the class topper. I was saying Thanks to God for first 10 mins. She was a bit confused about Ist question and I corrected her. We had 10 questions to be answered and I got 9 from her. I deserved it right, as I resolved her starting trouble ?
I used get very much tensed just before the day of exam and then call Varun, Unni, Adarsh, Prabin and Jijin 10 times a day. Whenever I asked them about some chapter, "da did you study that.. any idea" everyone would say a long NO and I would go to bed aaraamse.!! We were very open about studies. If we say we didn't study thats the end. We can't write a right answer to that question eventhough we write a lot. . We thought Varun was also like us. This guy will say didn't study that chapter, this chapter, blah blah and will get nice marks. One day just before the exam Varun asked a series of tough doubts to Adarsh and he only answered em. Then only we realized that this bugger knew all answers. When we checked his Text Books, we saw he had underlined all the chapters. After that we never trusted him in exams.
There were exams like computer science lab and all where we used to bi heart all programs and vomit in the system. Man.. Nobody knew how to use a system at that time.. We thought Varun had a little idea and we often asked doubts to him. We all were very bad in programming. Once Unni wanted to open C program window and as he doesn't know he asked Varun. He told him to goto RUN command prompt and type " Open C program please". This poor Unni did the same. Moreover he was complaining that C program was not launching. I still remember remember Vigil kumar claiming that he got partial output in C Lab exam for finding Prime numbers. His program will print "Enter your Number" display message and won't do anything after that. You can't deny that its a partial output..
"Da.. show it to me ... come on shimith.. at least one yaar.. be a man..!!" This is S1S2 Electrical Technology Series exam. Adarsh is so nervous to get answers like everyone in the hall.. He saw me taking 1 or 2 extra papers and thought I was writing something related to the subject..poor dude.. He started pulling my shirt even after telling him that my answers were wrong.

A Few Things That I Remember - Chapter 1
"Run.. Run guys…eaahhh …Freeedommmm.....! " Varun screamed. 4 guys are in home run and they are using the gap between guys and gals desks as their playground. 2 of them finished with ease but the other one...Oh dear..RIP. At last Varun also finished but as a true hero.. he was bleeding with wounds on ears and hands. You all might think this as a sport event and guys with great team spirit.. Bet You are wrong.. Though the later one is true.
Location College of Engineering Thalassery.. Poor pupil’s CET. This happened in Year 2002, Semester 3 IT class. I am Shimith and I am one of the 2 who escaped from Rasheeds beefy Biceps.. The other one was Mr. Adarsh. Poor Varun ( though he is rich ) failed to get out of the class with no injuries.. Rasheed, the fourth guy, almost killed him .. Great athelates say if you can improve your timing you can always succeed.. Its just a matter of reflex to the gunshot. And Myself and Adarsh had shown it to all our classmates. Now coming to the matter.... We 3 were attacked by Resheed.. It was all becoz of me.. There is no one in my class who never got irritated of me.
We used to call Rasheed as Mariam Rasheeda.. And it happened like this. One day when I was sitting next to Rasheed , I saw “Mariam” written on the desk next to his place. Then I started calling him Mariam Rasheeda..And it got free publicity and made him popular.. The whole college started calling him with his new name concatenated in front of his name. So was my bench mates.. Adarsh, Varun, Prabin, Jijin and Unni. But Rasheed was an innocent and introvert guy who never believed in Popularity and show offs. So obviously he wanted make an end to this. And we were attacked. Only 3 of us though. Bloody Unni, prabin and Jijin escaped... But for me this was nothing. I already had a near death experience with Rasheed when I met him in a very early morning class on the same day I belive. Aamen..
I always thought engineering college is like, Oh My God .. Its Engineering college.. Yeap.. I had no clue about an Engineering college .. not even about a college as I was a Plus 2 student.. Most of the people grow after 10th.. So they will opt for College; pre degree.. For me Plus 2 was a Demotion. I went for Plus 2 science as my cousin was there and I can get his books. No expenditure whatsoever. It was like back to Nursery school… Anyways.. Mom was very optimistic about my higher studies.. She never expected me joining an Engineering college. As, for her people should study very well and do day to day home works, like my cousin and she got good entrance marks and joined B Tech IT as well. I was not that bad.. I also got Bigg rank in entrance exam, around 8 thousand I guess. To tell you the truth, I was never interested in B tech as I was inspired by my other cousin, neighbor, who goes to Arts college and comes home in 10 mins like Sourav gangly bats for India. I was even short listed for Bsc chemistry in same college. But I got Mechanical Engg seat in a Calicut engg college also.. Yieks.. Total confusion. My dad is a very smart person. He convinced me that I won’t be able to finish Mech engg as I don’t have that much brain.. Huh.. He questioned my Medulla oblongata.. Isn’t it..? But I didn’t say a single word coz I know that was true. He told me to opt for IT or CS in Kannur, my place, keeping in mind that I can get my cousin’s books and no extra hostel fees. Double Bulls Eye on a single plate.!! Anyways, Ramayana or Mahabharatha.. Both are same for me. So I opted for it and got placed in CET(ly).. Now here is the thing, if you are going for something bigg, (as others think) there will be a hell lot of people to advice(scare) you as if they have gone through all of em. Same old crap ragging shit stories.. But I was stuck with a new fact that I need to speak English in Engg college.. Now that made shit out of me and made me nervous. I knew only “welcome to ooty and Nice to meet you” in English. Thanks to Jagathy.. What to do what to do. So, I started to learn more. But I could learn only one single sentence with no spelling mistake and grammar.. “What is your Good name?”. Who cares.. Atleast I learned that bit.. huh. So my first day in my college, I met this a bit fat guy, who was sitting alone.. I told myself, shimith my boy, time to prove your English skill(s).. I went to him and asked “ Haai, what is your good name?” He said “ My name is Rasheed KP and Good name is Rasheed.. From that day onwards Rasheed was my prey, until the day when I became his.
First and second semester were clubbed to make us shit in the class a whole year. As Plus 2 hangover was there, I used to listen all lecturers for a year. I made some good friends as well. Varun, Adarsh, Unni, Prabin and Jijin. All my classmates were my friends. But these guys, I felt they were different.
Adarsh is a cool guy. No tension at all about anything. Initially I felt like he got Kidnappers look because of the way he was staring at me on the day I joined college. Later I realized that he was my ooold schoolmate. His parents are teachers. But that didn’t affect him at all. And, I don’t know why, whenever I see him coming to college with a plastic cover of books, sorry book, tucked in his shoulder, I used to feel like he is coming in slow motion with background music of “coolie number one main coolie number one.. “ Yeah baby he is cool.. Unnikrishnan ( Unni), I met him in my Plus Two school and he was my senior , my cousin’s classmate. He was the only guy in our class with clear cut Mustache. He is a guy with lots and lots of expectation. Not about lecturers. Though Professors are exceptions. Whenever a gal smiles at him he thinks that’s his gal… There were lot.. He knows how to soap all Professors. Prabin Prakash, a very smart name in our gang, a silent student.. No one knew that he was our classmate for the whole first year. That much quiet fella. Later we came to know that he was doing meditation to capture all Small talks happening in the whole class. He was very much passionate about Two bus stands in Thalassery. He often thinks about minimizing distance between both for some business purpose, I guess. He used to sit just next to our Desk and bend like Dish Antenna whenever we were discussing the importance of life and future(J). Varun Mohan only found this. Aah Varun Mohan, Nobody knows that he is the richest guy in our class. His Father is in TATA Tea, got an estate in Munnar. A real “estate” guy, still acquiring Govt’s Land. He was a classmate of my close friend and the brightest student in our group with background record of some 15th rank in SSLC and Pre Degree Topper in his college with Distinction.. But never showed that headache. So we thought he was a dumb guy like us. Jijin Raj.. Our nations new face, the rising Sun of CET(ly).. A true Communist party follower.. Now Developing s/w for a French client.. He used to get some stories about communist people from his Father , who is a Leader , and share those valuable stories with loads of masala. But he was a person with good heart. He was the official ball boy of our college football match.. He had returned countless balls (Foot) into the ground. Unni and Jijin always had mutual understanding on what they talk. Rest of us know that all are blunder. But still we used to support our friends. So we also participated in those arguments as well.. There is not even an Atom on which they didn’t comment on from our college. They just need a glance at one person, the whole history and biology of that person will print as output. I used to think that they should have been in psychiatry or someone like the palm reader in our temples. Not more than that. One more guy was there.. Mr Vijil Kumar.. Smart good looking mallu guy from Goa, who always wonder what he is doing and why he is in Engg college.. So we became good friends to invetigate whats after college .!! I think Unni and Varun had some thoughts about it initially but we killed all of em. I had no idea what I am doing there neither anyone of us. Varun was having some idea about M tech and all I believe. He used to mention some GATE frequently in our discussion. Didn’t undertsand what he was trying to say till last semester. And he is the one who brought the word Infosys in our team and Ist one to get placed there. (More to follow with good English…)
